PHOENIX – A former high school wrestling coach accused of sending sexually explicit text messages to a student has pleaded guilty to child abuse with sexual intent.
A Superior Court spokesman said Kyle DeBerry, 25, entered his plea Monday morning. Sentencing is scheduled for July 8.
DeBerry was a wrestling coach and special education teacher at Desert Edge High School in Goodyear.
He was arrested Dec. 11 after an investigation that began in August. He originally was charged with luring a minor for sexual exploitation.
According to court paperwork, a 16-year-old female student told school staff that she had received sexually explicit text messages from DeBerry. She provided screen shots from her cellphone showing the messages sent and received.
The student told police that DeBerry requested to have sex with her and asked her to send photographs of herself to him.
The victim also told police that she pushed DeBerry away after he kissed her on the lips and bit her neck while they were in a school supply room.
