MESA, Ariz. -- A man is in the hospital after firefighters pulled him from a burning car parked in the driveway of a Mesa home early Monday morning.

It happened just after midnight in the neighborhood northeast of Alma School and Baseline roads.

Homeowner Richard Gengler woke to discover firefighters in his driveway. He said he does not know the victim and did not recognize the car.

"I had no clue, never seen it before," he said.

It's not clear what sparked the fire but firefighters said it looks like it started under the hood.

"I thought the car was going to explode 'cause you could see just the flames like all over the car," neighbor Indira Felix said.

The flames spread from the car to the garage, but firefighters were able to stop it there.

The victim, a man in his mid-20s, has not been identified. He was taken to the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available, but crews said he suffered severe burns.

Firefighters said the man might have been intoxicated. Mesa police said they hoped to release more information about him later in the day.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
