PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Fire Department is rescuing a hiker from Piestewa Peak.
About 4:25 p.m., dispatchers received a call about a teen near the summit of the mountain having medical problems.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Jonathan Jacobs said the hiker will be airlifted off the mountain after being stabilized by rescue crews.
Jacobs said the decision to use a helicopter was made based on the hiker's location on the mountain and medical condition.
Using a big wheel operation instead of an air operation would take about an hour and a half longer, Jacobs said.
The fire department is advising hikers to be aware of their physical capabilities, wear appropriate hiking gear, and hydrate before they even hit the trail.
