SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- A fast-growing wildfire in southern Arizona has prompted the evacuation of dozens of small neighborhoods near Sierra Vista.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Monument Fire has burned more than 9,000 acres of the Coronado National Forest and is 17 percent contained.
Forty homes and 10 other structures have already burned.
The blaze has done more property damage than the huge Wallow Fire in the White Mountains and homeowners and their animals are still in the path of the fire.
Shelters for evacuees have been set up. One is at the old Apache Middle School, 3305 E. Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista. The Red Cross set up a receiving center at the Palominas Elementary School, 10385 E. Hwy 92, Hereford. It is open until 7 p.m.
Other shelters are housing pets for people forced to evacuate.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office has resource information available to help move large animals. Anyone needing assistance is asked to call the sheriff's office at 520-432-9500 and they will be able to give phone numbers for volunteers to help in this effort.
Investigators think the fire is human-caused.
