LAVEEN, Ariz. -- A Laveen home was destroyed after it caught fire early Saturday morning.
About 4:30 a.m., the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the fire on the 4900 block of West Desert Drive, which is near 51st Avenue and Dobbins Road.
When firefighters arrived, they saw a large fire on the second floor of the two-story house.
As firefighters began to enter the home to search for occupants, the roof collapsed.
"The fire became so intense that we actually had structural collapse," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure. "The firefighters had to pull out for their safety."
The fire was fought with a defensive strategy, using large streams of water from a ladder truck to protect nearby homes.
No one was home at the time of the fire. Neighbors told the fire department the family of six had left around 8 p.m.
The cause and origin of the fire were still under investigation Saturday morning.
