SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A Surprise man accused of forcing his underage sons to drink alcohol has pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges.

Maricopa County prosecutors said Kristopher Harvey, 32, entered his plea on Wednesday.

Harvey’s kids, ages 12 and 13, were visiting from out of state earlier this month when they drank some of their father’s alcohol.

When Harvey found out that his kids had been drinking, he reportedly decided to teach them a lesson by making them take shots in his backyard. Harvey allegedly told his children that they couldn’t come back inside until they drank all the alcohol, and then he threw them in the pool.

Police were called after neighbors said they heard screaming and crying coming from the backyard.

Authorities said both boys were highly intoxicated.

Harvey told police that he wanted to teach his children the effects of drinking irresponsibly, and described the incident as “the biggest mistake of my life.”

Harvey is due back in court on August 6.
