PHOENIX -- A Valley father is growing a special strain of marijuana to help his ailing daughter.
He says watching his then 3-month-old daughter suffer seizures was unbearable.
"It's hell. You're seeking answers and you're desperate," said J.P. Holyoak of Arizona Natural Selections.
So Holyoak went into the medical marijuana business head first to find an answer.
"We were at the end of our rope. We were on the pharmaceutical merry-go-round with failed drug after failed drug...none of them worked. Cannabis worked," said Holyoak.
Reese is now five years old. She has brain abnormalities and seizures.
Holyoak bought a warehouse for growing marijuana plants for his two Arizona Natural Selections dispensaries in the Valley.
But he was after a very specific strain of the plant -- something called Charlotte's Web. It was only available in Colorado.
Holyoak hired someone to re-create the strain in Arizona.
"The mission was to create an all CBD strain. There are people who have them and they are tightly held. We wanted to have our own so we could provide our patients with the benefits," said Cody Fasbinder, Arizona Natural Selections Director of Cultivation.
Fasbinder did it on his very first try.
This strain, that Holyoak hasn't yet named, is very low in Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. THC is what gets people high. The special strain is also extremely high in Cannabidiol, or CBD, which calms Reese's brain.
Reese now takes this brand new strain three times a day as an oil extract.
Her seizures have gone from 25 week to very infrequent.
"It's reduced them enough where it's manageable and it's tolerable and it's allowing her to learn and develop and grow," said Holyoak.
Which to Holyoak is worth all the work.
