MESA, Ariz. -- An East Valley man accidentally ran over his adult son while backing out of the driveway of his home, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, in his early 20s, was flown to the hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators spent hours at the scene Wednesday looking into all possibilities, but a spokesman says impairment was not a factor.
“It was an accident,” said the man’s girlfriend, who declined to be identified. When asked how her boyfriend is doing, she said, “Not so good; he’s having a hard time.”
“He loves his son, would do anything for his son,” said neighbor Rocky Cook who drove by the home minutes before the accident.
“Mitchell was laying, sitting on the curb, all bent over,” said Cook. “He backed over him, backing up. It could have happened to anyone.”
Neighbors say prayers remain with both father and son.
“I’m concerned about both of them,” said Cook.
