SUPAI, Ariz. -- A Mesa woman died after being struck by a falling tree branch while camping in Supai Canyon over the weekend.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, Danielle Marie Harris, 27, was staying at the designated campground in the canyon with nine other people in her group, all from the Phoenix area.

Harris was seated at a picnic table under a large cottonwood tree in the campground Saturday afternoon. Investigators believe that as a result of high winds, a large branch approximately 12 inches in diameter broke off and struck Harris.

Harris suffered severe head trauma and other injuries. Medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced her dead.

A portion of the branch also hit a 47-year-old Peoria man who was standing close to the picnic table. He was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening then airlifted to the Flagstaff Medical Center.

Coconino County sheriff's detectives are continuing the investigation.

A trust fund has been set up for her two young sons.
