PHOENIX (AP) -- A former Boy Scouts leader in Phoenix has pleaded not guilty to charges accusing him of sexual abuse of boys over three decades.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman says 66-year-old William John Challberg pleaded not guilty on Monday. He faces 23 counts of sexual conduct with a minor and of other crimes.

A second man charged in the case, 51-year-old Julian Mendoza, also pleaded not guilty. He faces 10 counts.

Police say Mendoza lived with Challberg in Phoenix where many of alleged offenses occurred between 1983 and 2003.

Police have alleged the men had inappropriate contact with at least five boys who ranged in age from 9 to 16.

Police say one of the alleged victims was a Boy Scout while the others were neighborhood children and friends.
