PHOENIX -- Phoenix police said an 87-year-old man died after he was hit by a car Monday evening.
Edward Frances Legge was hit while crossing 19th Avenue mid-block south of Cactus Road at about 6 p.m.
Police said Legge was crossing west to east and the 2006 four-door car had been traveling north on 19th Avenue in the curb lane.
Legge was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
The 44-year-old male driver was not injured. Detectives said he was evaluated and no impairment was found.
Last year, there were 34 fatal pedestrian collisions in the city of Phoenix alone, according to police. From January to September of this year, there have been 26 fatal collisions involving pedestrians.
Police spokesman Officer James Holmes said Phoenix and the state of Arizona rank very high in comparison to the rest of the country for pedestrian-vehicle collisions. He said many, if not all, of these could have been avoided.
Police released a list of pedestrian safety tips.
