PHOENIX -- A fire at a west Phoenix apartment complex has displaced up to 60 people, according to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter.

Firefighters from Phoenix, Avondale and Glendale were dispatched to San Marina Apartments near 67th Avenue and Indian School Road around 3:45 p.m. Friday, after someone called 911 to report smoke coming from a second-story unit.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure said firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the unit but discovered flames had spread to an attic and were tearing through the roof.

The entire building had smoke, fire and water damage, Mure said.

"I wasn't aware of anything until I saw flames," said Ashley Godinez, who saw the fire through the back window of her downstairs apartment, where she lives with her three children. "We're OK. I don't know about our apartment."

The Phoenix Fire Department Crisis Response Team is working with the Red Cross to find temporary shelter for the displaced residents.

Investigators were on scene trying to determine the cause and origin.

No injuries were reported.
