YOUNGTOWN, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help as detectives investigate an animal abuse case in Youngtown.

According to MCSO, a small black-and-white shih-tzu was found in a dumpster at the QuikTrip convenience market near El Mirage Road and Olive Avenue at about noon on Saturday.

Sheriff's detectives immediately transported the approximately 2-year-old dog to a veterinarian for medical treatment. The dog died shortly afterward due to the injuries it sustained.

The MCSO Animal Crimes Unit is seeking information regarding the dog's owner or any person involved in this incident.
