PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are seeking information from the public after a dog was stabbed during a burglary at a home near 59th Avenue and Dobbins Road on Wednesday.

The residents returned home at about 3:30 p.m. and discovered their house had been burglarized.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said holes were punched in the walls and liquids from the refrigerator were thrown about the house. Electronic equipment and clothes were stolen.

"The most disturbing thing was that the suspect or suspects found a samurai sword in the house and used it to stab the family dog numerous times," Thompson said.

He said the 3-year-old shih tzu was in its kennel at the time and did not pose a threat to the intruders.

The family took the shih tzu to a veterinarian, but the injuries were so extensive that the animal had to be put down. The family has had the dog since it was a puppy.

"I've had him every since he was baby," Kimberly Mims about her beloved dog. "It's hard on me. It's hard on the family and now you know I don't want to come home. I don't want to stay here. My son doesn't want to be here. He feels like he was targeted. He feels like maybe it was somebody that didn't like him at school."

Anyone who has information about this incident or knows who the suspect or suspects may be is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
