PHOENIX -- An American Airlines flight from San Diego to Dallas made an unscheduled landing at Sky Harbor Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Flight 362 stopped in Phoenix because there was a disruptive passenger on board, according to a spokesperson for American Airlines.

The passenger was taken off the plane and put in custody by authorities.

Officers from the Phoenix Police Department helped remove the passenger, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

"They got four or five large men who were traveling alone and they surrounded the gentleman in his seat with the larger men," said passenger Sandra Randolph. "Once the guys were all around him calmed down a little bit."

"We stopped in Phoenix and we were greeted by the police, said Randolph, "They came in they handcuffed him, they exited from the plane and then they told us that they had to get gas and that the plane was heavy so that they had to check the plane."

Incidents that occur in flight fall under the jurisdiction of the FBI. The FBI will investigate to determine if any federal laws were violated.

The other passengers remained on the plane and the flight continued on to Dallas.

Flight diverted to Phoenix due to unruly passenger

PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities say an American Airlines flight was diverted to Phoenix because of an unruly passenger.

Flight 362 from San Diego was headed to Dallas on Wednesday afternoon when airline officials say the plane had to land at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport due to a disruptive passenger on board.

Phoenix fire and police officials met the plane at the gate. Paramedics treated the unidentified passenger, who was taken off the aircraft and arrested.

Information about the passenger and the behavior on board wasn't immediately released.

Airport officials referred all questions to the FBI, which didn't immediately return calls.

An American Airlines spokesman says the plane took off from Sky Harbor about an hour later and resumed its flight to Texas.
