FLAGSTAFF -- Department of Public Safety officers are searching for the wrong-way driver who might have caused a serious wreck on Interstate 40 near Flagstaff Sunday afternoon.

It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. on eastbound I-40 at Flagstaff Ranch Road.

According to Chad Black of Arizona Public Safety News Network, DPS had received calls about a wrong-way driver in a small white sedan shortly before the wreck, in which a semi apparently rear-ended a small passenger car.

Witnesses on the scene reportedly told investigators that the wrong-way driver was responsible for the wreck. The car that was rear-ended apparently had stopped because another vehicle was coming at it, driving the wrong way.

The semi then hit the stopped car.

The wrong-way driver got off I-40 at the next exit. That vehicle hasn't been seen since the wreck.

Four people reportedly were injured, one of them seriously. Those patients were taken by ground ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center.
