MESA, Ariz. – A Department of Public Safety officer and a pickup truck driver were injured in a rollover accident on U.S. 60 west of Val Vista Drive in Mesa late Monday morning.
The officer was stopped on the right shoulder with his emergency lights on while he was finishing writing notes from a traffic stop at about 10:45 a.m., according to DPS spokesman Officer Carrick Cook.
A pickup truck veered to the right then hit the left side of the patrol car and rolled over.
The driver of the truck had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The officer and the driver received minor injuries.
"This is a clear example of why the move over law is significant," Cook said in an email to 3TV. "It would have prevented the crash and injuries to both parties."
Arizona's law requires motorists to move over one lane, or slow down and use caution if changing lanes is not possible, when driving by any vehicle with flashing lights that is pulled to the side of the roadway.
Cook said distracted driving may have been a factor in the crash.
