CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- A Department of Public Safety officer is recovering after a head-on crash in Pinal County.

Norman Hupp suffered head injuries in the Monday afternoon wreck. He was still St. Joseph's Hospital Tuesday, and there was no indication of when doctors might discharge him.

According to the Casa Grande Police Department, the crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. at Pinal Avenue (State Route 387) and Hopi Drive.

Investigators said Hupp was southbound on Pinal Avenue/387 when a northbound white Jeep Grand Cherokee turned left in front of him. The two vehicles collided head-on.

Pedro Hernandez, 19, was behind the wheel of the Jeep. Police said he suffered minor injuries and was taken by ground ambulance to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center.

Investigators said impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Hernandez will face a charge of failure to yield, police said.

Casa Grande is about an hour southeast of Phoenix.
