PAYSON, Ariz. -- A fire is burning in a rough and remote section of the Tonto National Forest near Payson.
The Big Canyon Fire was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
It is burning two miles west of the Tonto Fish Hatchery in the Big Canyon area near the Highline Trail, approximately 14 miles east of Payson.
The lightning-caused fire was estimated at more than 150 acres Monday evening and there is no containment.
"This is a significant fire spread for this time of year," said Incident Cmdr. Dave Ramirez. "Today's fire activity was moderate, with ground fuels burning hot, low spotting due to recent rain, occasional torching. We received increased air and ground support today and made good progress."
Approximately 136 firefighters are battling the fire from the air and ground.
