PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division office in west Phoenix is closed Monday due to a copper theft.
The facility at 51st Avenue and Indian School Road is running on temporary power and is unable to provide any customer services, according to ADOT officials.
Both the power and air-conditioning systems were affected by the copper wiring theft, which is estimated to have occurred early Monday morning.
"Based on this power failure that occurred with the loss of the copper wiring, there is no loss or compromise to the computer system that holds the motor vehicle files," ADOT spokesman Harold Sanders said. "So there is nothing for the public to be concerned about in that respect."
Repairs are estimated to take at least a day and cost approximately $5,000.
ADOT staff members assigned to the 51st Avenue office are being redeployed to provide additional help at other Valley office locations. A complete list of Phoenix-area MVD office locations can be found at www.azdot.gov/mvd/OfficeHourssql/PhxAreaLocations.asp. Customers can also use http://servicearizona.com.
Anyone with information on the copper theft is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
