PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- A Chandler man was arrested by Prescott police earlier this week after he allegedly abused a 4-year-old boy.
Prescott police said officers responded to an apartment complex late Wednesday morning after receiving word that a man had been abusing a child.
Police arrived to find the boy in his grandmother’s apartment. Officers said the child appeared to be upset, but he was not physically injured.
The grandmother reportedly told police that the child had gone with her boyfriend, Dion Bennetts, to take the trash out.
She said nothing appeared to be wrong when her grandchild returned home, but she didn’t know where Bennetts had gone.
Officers spoke with the two women who called police, and they claimed to have witnessed Bennetts using very offensive language towards to boy.
They also claimed that Bennetts hit the child in the head with a plastic trash can, knocking him to the ground and causing him to cry.
When Bennetts noticed the women watching, he reportedly began yelling and cursing at them.
The women said they called police immediately after they witnessed the abuse.
Bennetts was located on the other side of the apartment complex and allegedly told police he abused the boy because he wasn’t listening and was being disobedient.
Bennetts, 49, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct per domestic violence.
He was also charged with two counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly yelling at the two witnesses.
