CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A man who allegedly committed a carjacking on Sunday evening was arrested after leading police on a chase through Chandler.
Daniel Hernandez, 19, is accused of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, criminal damage, unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle and reckless driving.
The victim told police he was in a rental car in the parking lot of a laundromat at 402 S. Arizona Avenue when the suspect walked up to him, pointed a sharp object at him and told him to get out of his vehicle.
The victim complied and Hernandez stole the vehicle and drove away, according to Sgt. Joe Favazzo with the Chandler Police Dept.
The victim went to a nearby Circle K and called police.
Several minutes later, an officer located the vehicle with no lights on and attempted to stop it at Fairview and Palm. That is when Hernandez fled.
Hernandez was pursued through the city, south through Sun Lakes and eastbound on Riggs Road where stop sticks were successfully deployed at Riggs and Crossbow. The stop sticks shredded one of the tires on the suspect's vehicle.
Hernandez came to a stop at Riggs and Mountain where he was taken into custody. Police said Hernandez was on supervised probation at the time of the carjacking.
During the pursuit, a police car and a gate near Sun Lakes were damaged.
