PHOENIX -- Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pry a driver from a car that was wrapped around a pole Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 6 a.m. on northbound Interstate 17 at Bell Road.

It's not clear what caused the wreck, but aerial video from the scene showed the car wrapped around the light pole, the passenger side caved in.

No other vehicles were involved.

The driver, now identified as Stephanie Cristiani, 46, of Phoenix, was taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital. She was the only one in the car.

Department of Public Safety Officer Bart Graves said Thursday morning that Cristiani died. No other information about her has been released.

As crews worked to clear the scene, aerial video showed a fire truck pulling the mangled car, which was bent to nearly a right angle, away from the pole.

The crash is still under investigation.
