PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities say a 9-year-old Tonopah boy has died after being wounded by what was described as a ricochet bullet as a group of family and friends were shooting in the desert near his home.

Deputy Chris Hegstrom of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the boy died Thursday at a Phoenix hospital. He was shot Wednesday morning.

Hegstrom says the boy's identity was withheld because of the continuing investigation and that no charges have been filed pending the investigation's outcome.

Another sheriff's spokesman said Wednesday that initial statements from those involved indicated that another person in the group fired the shot that accidentally wounded the boy from a handgun.

According to Deputy Joaquin Enriquez, the group included two adults, the boy's teenage sister, and two other children.
