CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a person believed to be in the country illegally has been fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 10 near Chandler.

Gila River police and Arizona Department of Public Safety officials are investigating the fatal accident on the southern outskirts of the Phoenix area.

The body was found Thursday morning on Riggs Road east of Interstate 10 on the Gila River Indian Community's reservation.

DPS officers made a traffic stop earlier and passengers in the vehicle fled from the scene. They were suspected to be immigrants in the U.S. illegally.

One person was located 45 minutes later and that led to a foot pursuit. DPS says the victim ran onto Riggs Road and was hit by a vehicle.

The name of the dead person hasn't been released yet.
