PHOENIX -- Blood transfusions have been lifesavers for a little boy at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Two-month-old Trenton has only known the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at the hospital as his home.
Trenton was born on May 29 with severe heart problems. He has already had two major surgeries and 28 blood transfusions.
"Just from the first probably 12 hours we were here, the first day of his life, he had four blood transfusions," said his mother, Britni Jones. "And then they saved his life so every couple days for the first month of his life he had a blood transfusion."
Trenton is so tiny that he can only receive an ounce or two of blood at a time, but his mom says he's growing stronger every day thanks to the generosity of donors.
Patients at PCH require an average of 827 blood transfusions every month.
With so many donors out of town for the summer, supply just isn't where it needs to be and Valley blood banks need help.
United Blood Services has partnered with Volkswagen to encourage more people to give blood this summer. Donate blood by Aug. 31 to be entered to win a 2013 Passat S. For more information, visit http://arizonahero.com.
