AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Avondale Police have arrested the man suspected of shooting and killing a woman at Westview High School on Friday.

Thomas Lamont Moton, 38, was apprehended late Friday night at a location in Avondale.

The Avondale Police Department’s CAT team was conducting surveillance at a home when Moton was seen leaving the residence and getting into a vehicle.

He was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

Moton has been booked into Maricopa County’s 4th Avenue jail on a first-degree murder charge. Other charges are still pending.

Moton is accused of shooting Takesha Barnes, 33, while she attended her daughter’s eighth grade graduation ceremony.

Moton is Barnes’ ex-boyfriend, and is believed to have had a history of domestic violence with her.

Barnes attempted to leave Friday’s graduation ceremony early after discovering that Moton was on his way there to try to find her.

Police said Moton shot Barnes in the school’s parking lot.

Moton fled the scene on a motorcycle, but was only able to avoid arrest for a few hours.
