FLORENCE, Ariz. -- Authorities are investigating the death of an Arizona Department of Corrections inmate that occurred Sunday morning at the Florence prison.
Prison officials say 25-year-old Marcelo Gonzalez died after a confrontation with a fellow inmate, 24-year-old Jonathan Williams.
The inmates were reportedly in adjacent outdoor recreation enclosures when one of the inmates created a small opening at the bottom of the fencing. Investigators believe he was attempting to access the other inmate's fenced-off area to commit assault.
Correctional officers responded and restrained Williams. Life-saving measures began on Gonzalez, who was discovered lying face-down.
Williams reportedly told officers he acted in self-defense.
He had not been charged Sunday afternoon, but the Department of Corrections and Pinal County Attorney's Office have been investigating the confrontation.
Gonzalez had been in state prison since Sept. 27, 2012, after he was convicted in Maricopa County of burglary and second-degree escape. He was sentenced to eight years.
Williams was also sentenced in Maricopa County for a burglary conviction, and began his sentence of 6.5 years Dec. 8, 2010.
Prison officials said Sunday afternoon that the unit was on lockdown.
