PHOENIX – Sheriff Joe Arpaio is implementing a new campaign that will reflect patriotism in his jails just in time for Veteran’s Day.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office’s campaign will require every cell have an American flag displayed. The jails hold about 8,500 inmates.

“Any defacement or vandalism of the flags by inmates comes with the penalty of bread and water,” Arpaio said. “Ten inmates are currently on bread and water for infraction.”

In the past year, Arpaio has hired 80 detention officers who have served in the military. It is a priority of Arpaio to hire veterans, and MCSO has a more than 600 veterans working there.

Arpaio is trying to house all inmate veterans together.

In addition to the American flags, the jails play “God Bless America” and the National Anthem daily.
