PHOENIX (AP) -- Three Arizona National Guard soldiers from Phoenix are being awarded Purple Heart medals for wounds suffered during a 2013 deployment to Afghanistan.

The National Guard says Pfc. Gino Duran, Spc. Antonio Medrano, and Spc. Leif Skoog received the medals during a ceremony Saturday at Camp Navajo, a National Guard installation in Bellemont in northern Arizona.

According to the National Guard, the three soldiers were injured during separate incidents in September and October when their unit was attacked with improvised explosive devices.

The three soldiers served a nine-month deployment with the 819th Engineer Company. The unit's mission was to clear travel routes by detecting and eliminating IEDs.
