PHOENIX -- A Phoenix police officer is in the hospital after an early morning car crash.

It happened at the intersection of 43rd and Sweetwater avenues.

According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a car ran a red light and hit the officer's vehicle. The car then crashed into a retaining wall.

Aerial video from the Fort McDowell Casino News Chopper showed several police vehicles on the scene. Photos showed the police SUV sitting on the sidewalk, nudged up against a tree a few feet from the wall.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was transported for precautionary reasons. He is expected to recover.

The driver of the car was transported, as well.

No other details were immediately available.
