MESA, Ariz. -- A suspected drunk driver is in custody after plowing into the lobby of a Mesa hotel and then backing up and fleeing the scene.

It happened at about 3 a.m. Monday at the Travelodge Suites on Main Street just west of Greenfield Road in Mesa.

Video from the scene showed the damage to the hotel and the totaled car.

A clerk was behind the desk just a few feet from where the car went through the wall. She was not injured.

Police say the car was completely inside the lobby by the time it came to a stop.

According to Darik Shah, the owner of the hotel, the driver backed up, hit a pillar outside and then drove off.

Police caught up with the suspected drunk driver a few blocks away. They took him into custody without further incident.

Investigators have not released any information about that driver.

According to the Travelodge website, the hotel had been renovated recently.
