PHOENIX -- Police believe impairment might have been the cause of a deadly hit-and-run wreck in West Phoenix early Saturday morning.

It happened just after 5 a.m. on 67th Avenue just north of Lower Buckeye Road.

According to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, the driver of a Dodge Charger hit a Dodge Caravan as he tried to speed past.

Three people in the Caravan, which is an AAA cab, were injured, one of them seriously.

A victim in the Charger did not survive his injuries. Police have not confirmed that man's identity. They do not think he was wearing a seat belt.

Martos said the driver of the Charger, a 45-year-old Hispanic man, fled the scene. Officers were able to locate him later. Police have not released any information about the man, but Martos said charges are pending as soon as he is released from the hospital.
