PHOENIX -- Nothing changes the look and feel of a room faster than a rug.

Scottsdale designer Britany Simon, the runner-up on season seven of HGTV Design Star, says a rug draws the eye to create a focal point -- one you select.

A rug can work wonders on any room -- bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, even hallways.

Rugs can be expensive, but Simon says you can save major bucks by creating your own.

She suggested Tempe Sales or Mesa Sales, where you can find fabric for $1-$2/lineal foot and they'll even bind the edges.

This gives you the freedom to create a rug in any size or shape you want.

"Have fun with it!" Simon said. "Play around with some textures and color and do something a little more bold for your carpet choice. That's something you're going to see more of in million dollar spaces, but you can do it for a fraction of the cost."

In addition to Tempe Sales and Mesa Sales, Simon also suggested UnderFoot in Scottsdale. She says they have some bold flooring options.
