PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks along State Route 89A will be closed for five weeks to accommodate crews repaving a stretch of the highway.

The three-and-a-half mile stretch north of Sedona will be closed from May 27 to July 2, according to ADOT, so crews may repave the road between Pine Flat Campground and Oak Creek Vista overlook.

Drivers needing to reach Flagstaff from Sedona are advised to take a detour from Route 179 to Interstate 17. ADOT estimates the detour could add a half-hour to a commute.

During the repaving, crews will also repair the surface of the Pumphouse Wash Bridge and perform rockfall mitigation.

The crews will begin the first phase of the $2 million project on April 21, a statement from ADOT said, with May 22 as the anticipated finish. One lane will be closed Monday through Thursday during the phase, and all lanes will be open from May 23-26 for Memorial Day weekend.
