CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Nine people are in custody after fleeing from a Department of Public Safety officer during a traffic stop Thursday morning.

The officer stopped an SUV for speeding along Interstate 10 near Warner Road just after 8 a.m.

Nine men ran from the vehicle and through local car dealerships, according to DPS spokesman Raul Garcia.

They were all apprehended in a business area near Ray Road and 56th Street.

The men reportedly told officers that they are in the country illegally, looking for work.

Officers found police radios in the vehicle.

The suspects are being investigated for human smuggling.

Chandler and Tempe police departments assisted DPS.
