CLAYPOOL, Ariz. -- Five Gilbert police detectives were involved in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. 60 outside of Claypool Tuesday morning.

The police vehicles were unmarked and traveling as a group when they were involved in the collision. The detectives were returning to Gilbert from a special operation.

According to the Department of Public Safety, a vehicle was traveling westbound on U.S. 60 when the female driver crossed over the median and struck one of the Gilbert Police Department vehicles. A second police car then hit the woman's vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that crossed the median was airlifted to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The five officers suffered minor injuries and were not transported for medical care.
