SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -- A 4-month-old girl died Thursday afternoon after being left alone in the family bathtub.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 4800 block of East Whitehall Drive after receiving a report of a possible drowning.
The first deputy on scene relieved the father from performing CPR on the child until medics arrived.
The child was eventually transported by air ambulance to Cardon Children’s Hospital in Mesa where she was later pronounced dead.
The father told deputies that he had put his other child down for a nap when he began giving his 4-month-old a bath.
The girl was placed in a child bath seat, while a few inches of water filled the tub.
While the father was giving his daughter a bath, the other child woke up and walked into the bathroom.
The father told deputies that he left his daughter for about 90 seconds to put his other child back in bed, and returned to find his daughter face down in the water.
“We can only imagine how incredibly painful it must be to lose a child and it’s magnified around Christmas,” said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. “Too often we hear about parents leaving children alone for only a short period of time around water. What parents need to understand is that anytime a child is left alone around water is too long.”
