PHOENIX -- 3 On Your Side has uncovered a huge trend across the Valley and it's not a very good one for consumers.

This has to do with some very high-end sunglasses.

Designer sunglasses can cost anywhere from $200 to $400 a pair. They're extremely pricey.

So, if you're surfing the Internet and come across a smokin' deal, be careful because those sunglasses just might be stolen from what appears to be a crime wave here in the Valley.

Dr. Gary Morgan is having a difficult time keeping designer sunglasses stocked in his Peoria store.

The reason? They keep getting stolen.

In just the past few weeks, Morgan's optometry business has been broken into twice and the only things taken were sunglasses. Not just any sunglasses either. Expensive ones.

The loss was substantial. Morgan says $35,000 worth of sunglasses were stolen during the two burglaries and Morgan isn't the only victim either.

The Arizona Optometric Association tells 3 On Your Side that the break-ins have been a serious problem since June.

In fact, according to the organization, three optometry businesses in Peoria, three in Phoenix, three in Mesa and several other locations around the Valley have all been broken into.

The target, of course, was sunglasses.

"It says these guys are pros and I have a feeling that it's the same group of them targeting these optometrists," Morgan said.

The break-ins appear similar. The crooks smash a window, enter the store and in just minutes, they leave the showcases completely empty.

Morgan doesn't know where the sunglasses are going but says they could wind up on the Internet where they're being sold to unsuspecting consumers.

"If they're buying expensive sunglasses at a discounted price, then likely they are stolen," he said.

3 On Your Side has alerted different police departments about this issue, so it will be up to those agencies to do something.

As for the optometrists, they have all increased their security. Some have added cameras and motion detectors. Some have installed metal pull-down shades so windows can't be broken.

It's a lot of money to invest but worth if they want to stay in business.
