3 ON YOUR SIDE

Dirt-cheap firewood

06:15 PM Mountain Standard Time on Friday, December 1, 2006

There's nothing like a nice, warm fire on a crisp winter night. But in order to get that fire warm, you have to have wood.

So, 3 On Your Side went hunting for a dirt-cheap deal and found the cheapest wood in the Valley.

At Berry Bros. Firewood in Phoenix, you'll not only find plenty of firewood, but you'll also find what I think is a dirt-cheap deal.

But to get that deal, you have to buy in bulk.

"A quarter cord picked up at our yard is roughly $75 and a quarter cord's worth of something you'd find at a convenience store would be roughly $300," Tom Berry said.

Not bad, a quarter cord is $75 and a half cord is $150.

To give you an idea how much a half cord is, a half cord fits into the back of a full-size pickup truck.

And according to the "wood experts," that's the perfect amount to get you through the winter.

"Most families do two or three fires a week, which will average out to about half a cord a year," Berry said.

And according to Berry, if you're burning this often, coming to his lot really is a better deal.

"If you're spending $10 or $20 a week, it's well worth coming down here and buying enough for the season," he said.

And his customers seem to agree.

"I went online and checked out a few different places," one customer said. "Other than going up north this is about the best you can do."

"Price is very good here, probably about 20 percent less than I usually find," another added.

"Cheaper than other places, plus I like it better because it's better wood," a third said.

And besides lower prices, Berry said there's another reason why you should buy your firewood wholesale.

"A lot of these people selling wood right now are selling unseasoned and it's not only dangerous, it's a rip-off in my opinion," he said.

A rip-off, Berry said, because some of the wood you'll find might not even burn.

"A lot of wood that is not seasoned, it's not going to be burnable this season," Berry said.

But the best part about Berry Bros. Firewood is that it is a dirt-cheap deal.

Even if you don't want a half cord, you can still load up on as much as you can afford.
