Room addition dilemma worries homeowner

Sandra Taylor never knew her Phoenix home could land her in so much hot water.

"I don't feel like I should be harassed at all," Taylor said.

Taylor is talking about letters from the city of Phoenix citing her with a Notice of Ordinance violation.

And the violation comes with a hefty penalty.

"Twenty-five hundred dollars a day or six months in jail," Taylor said.

She's right. That's what it says.

But what could possibly be the problem? Well, it has to do with a small room that extends out into Taylor's carport.

Harper (inside Taylor's carport): Now, this is part of the carport that the city of Phoenix has a problem with. It only measures around 9 feet by 10 feet. And as you can see, it pretty much blends in with the entire home. But according to the city of Phoenix, that doesn't matter.

The city says it got a complaint about the room. And after looking into the matter as required, inspectors discovered the room was expanded without a city permit, which is needed.

But Taylor said that shouldn't be her dilemma. After all, her family bought the home nearly 10 years ago and the addition was there when they took possession of the house.

To hold her responsible after all these years for someone else's mistake, Taylor said, isn't right. She needed help.

"I was sitting there watching TV and I said, 'You know, I'm going to contact Gary Harper and 3 On Your Side,'" Taylor said.

I took Taylor down to City Hall in downtown Phoenix in hopes of getting her that permit so her room addition would be OK'd.

City inspectors looked at her situation and determined that her "illegal" room addition appeared, at least on paper, to be up to city code.

After paying a $167 permit fee, Taylor walked away with her permit, and walked away with a smile.

"I love you guys! I knew there was a reason I called you. Thanks," Taylor said.

Now, we got her the permit, but we are not out of the woods yet.

A city inspector will physically inspect the house tomorrow to make sure it is in good shape. And if it is, she will officially be legal.
