MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police said they questioned a person of interest from a hit-and-run that killed a 3-year-old girl Sunday.

Police said Jaqueline Monroe-Mendoza was getting out of her family's vehicle in the parking lot of their apartment complex near Alma School Road and Rio Salado Parkway when she was struck by the vehicle.

"After the little girl exited the vehicle, she began to run towards the parking lot," said Sgt. Efren Carmona with the Mesa Police Department. "The sister tried to grab the girl's shirt, and that's when the collision occurred."

Witnesses said both the front and back tires went over the little girl.

"The guy, he had his daughter in his arms and she was bleeding," said witness Carolina Urquijo. "He had blood all over him, and we were just asking what's going on. And I just like called 911 and like a couple of second later, the ambulance was already here."

Family friends said the little girl is survived by her two sisters, brother and father.

"They're sad, but we are helping them. All of the church people are here," said Eva Vega, a family friend.

Police said they have the vehicle they believe to be involved, and they interviewed a person of interest.

The person of interest was released Sunday night, according to Sgt. Tony Landato with the Mesa Police Department.

Landato said the "possible" vehicle is in police custody pending the service of a search warrant to process it for evidence.

No arrests have been made yet.
