PHOENIX -- Police are asking the public for help finding three men who walked up to the drive-thru window of a Phoenix Jack in the Box and opened fire through the window.
It happened shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
One employee, a 24-year-old man, was wounded. He was hit in the arm but was up and walking around when emergency crews arrived. He is expected to recover.
According to police, one of the three suspects was armed with a shotgun and fired at least once after knocking on the window.
"It is very brazen to do that, just to walk up to a window like that," Lt. Jeff Pierce of the Phoenix Police Department said.
The incident happened quite fast. It was less than 15 seconds from the time the three men walked up to the drive-thru window to when they fled immediately after the shooter fired.
All three men are believed to be Hispanic or African American, and they appear to be between 17 and 22 years old.
Police are studying surveillance video to see if they can identify the shooter or the men with him. They also are asking for the public's help.
"We hope that somebody in the community knows who these individuals are," Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department said. "They may have heard something second- or third-hand. It's those types of tips that help us solve crimes."
While the surveillance video clearly shows the trio at the drive-thru window, the camera was behind them, so their faces are never seen. Despite that, police are hopeful that somebody who knows one, two or all three of the suspects will be able to recognize them.
Investigators are trying to determine if the victim might have been acquainted with the suspects.
A second employee who was inside the restaurant at the time was not injured.
At this point, detectives are not sure if the victim was targeted or if the shooting was simply a random act of violence.
