PHOENIX -- Two people are in the hospital after an early morning shooting at a Phoenix apartment complex.

It happened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday at 30th and Van Buren streets.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered one wounded man lying near a large tree. A second wounded person was found inside a nearby apartment. Both victims reportedly are in serious condition, but they are expected to survive. Neither one has been identified.

Police are trying to piece together the minutes and hours leading up to the shooting. They have been on the scene all morning, gathering evidence and talking to witnesses. It's not clear if the two victims were able to provide any information to investigators before being taken to a local hospital.

"Several witnesses heard the shots and saw two Hispanic male suspects flee on foot," said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department. "One suspect attempted to flee in a white Navigator but collided with the apartment gate on the southeast end of the complex and fled on foot."

Officers found that Navigator with its lights on and its doors open.

Detectives do not have any other suspect information at this time, nor have they said if the two victims were acquainted. In addition, police have not indicated if this was a random shooting or if the victims were targeted.

Information will be updated as it develops.
