2 rescued from flooded Tucson wash

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Tucson firefighters say two people have been rescued after their vehicle was swept down a flooded wash.

Capt. Barrett Baker says the driver and passenger were found on top of their car Sunday morning because of the high water level.

According to the fire department, the car attempted to cross the residential wash shortly before 5:30 a.m. and the flowing water moved the vehicle downstream.

The car ended up stopping beneath a pedestrian bridge near Calle Betelgeux and Avenida Sirio.

Firefighters lowered a 14-foot ladder from the bridge and both people were able to climb to safety.

Baker says monsoon rains can cause washes to rise quickly and drivers are advised to wait instead of trying to drive across.
