TEMPE, Ariz. -- Two men were arrested Saturday after they tried to break into an unmarked police car occupied by two uniformed officers, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Paul Gardener and Chad Leakey were arrested near Baseline Road and McClintock Drive in Tempe.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pooley said Gardener opened the rear passenger door and attempted to get inside the vehicle until he realized the back seat was a cage in a police vehicle.

Gardener and Leakey attempted to run away but were quickly apprehended.

Gardener had a small baggie of methamphetamine when he was arrested and Leakey had a backpack with several pieces of mail that he had stolen earlier in the day, according to Pooley.

Police have linked Gardener and Leakey to another vehicle burglary and two other attempted vehicle burglaries in the area.

Gardener and Leakey were each booked into the Maricopa County Jail for one count of burglary and three counts of attempted burglary. Gardener was also charged with being in possession of a dangerous drug.

The U.S. Postal Service was notified and is investigating the mail theft.
