GILA COUNTY, Ariz. -- Deputies in Gila County have arrested two people in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy.
Sheriff Adam Shepherd said his office was called out to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center last Tuesday to look into a report of possible child abuse. Shepherd said Nathaniel Lopez was air-lifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital. The little boy died that afternoon.
Shepherd said his deputies arrested Marcelina Rich, 29, and Kyron Grow, 37, in connection with Nathaniel's death. Their relationship to the child was not immediately clear.
At this point, there are no details about what happened to Nathaniel or what injuries he suffered. In addition, investigators have not said anything about the suspects.
"Currently we are unable to release any further details as the investigation is on-going [sic]," Shepherd wrote in a media alert.
Rich was arrested and booked on a child neglect charge on Saturday.
Grow was arrested Monday afternoon and booked on a charge of first-degree murder.
Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center is in Globe, which is almost 90 miles -- roughly an hour and 40 minutes -- east of Phoenix on U.S. 60.
