CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Two Casa Grande men were arrested on drug charges after deputies discovered 282 pounds of marijuana inside a vehicle early Tuesday morning, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Benito Alvarado Gonzales, 42, and Benito Joseph Garcia, 21, were booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and transportation of marijuana for sale.

Members of the West Desert Task Force notified the sheriff's office of a suspicious vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 84 near Green Road just before 1 a.m., according to PCSO spokesman Tim Gaffney.

Deputies located the 1994 Chevy Suburban and conducted a traffic stop.

Gaffney said the rear doors opened and two people ran into the desert. They were not located.

Gonzales and Garcia remained in the vehicle.

Deputies found six bundles of marijuana wrapped in burlap inside the vehicle. The marijuana had a street value of $211,500.

According to Sheriff Paul Babeu, the suspects told detectives they were getting paid $6,000 to traffic the marijuana and an additional $300 per individual they smuggled into the United States illegally.
