PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested a Mesa man Monday in an undercover bestiality sting.

Deputies said James Naylor, 47, showed up at a meeting spot, expecting to have sex with a dog. Instead, he was arrested and booked on felony bestiality charges.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the arrest is the result of an ongoing undercover operation seeking to find and arrest people trying to have sex with animals.

Arpaio's deputies said Naylor was using Craigslist to search for dogs to have sex with.

After a two-month email conversation, they said Naylor agreed to meet Monday night. He was arrested without the dog being brought into the room.

The dog that was used as bait in this case was an MCSO rescue dog that is part of the sheriff's MASH Unit -- Maricopa County Sherrif's Office Animal Safe Haven.

James Naylor is a Mesa resident and is married with one child. Naylor is currently unemployed. Naylor faces bestiality charges which is a class-six felony.

Arpaio said people involved in bestiality use code words online to avoid being detected.

The sheriff has written two letters to Craigslist's CEO, asking for the online company to crack down on people posting about illegal acts, like bestiality. He said he's never received any communication back from the company.

"First of all, I'd like an answer," said Sheriff Arpaio. "I'm a large law enforcement agency. I've written two letters to these people. They don't even have the courtesy to respond. The least they could do is write me a letter. They're gonna get another letter."

According to Arpaio, his deputies became aware more than a year ago suspects were using Craigslist to communicate with others who have interest in the felony criminal acts of bestiality. Six suspects have been arrested and convicted in 3 separate investigations.
