This week Carey Peña made the move. Not only is Carey moving from reporting on 3 On Your Side and, as the Sunday Anchor of 3TV News at 9pm to the 3TV News at 10pm newscast she also has physically moved, her desk that is. Seems silly to write about but I thought I’d take this opportunity to discuss the organization of the newsroom as it is strategic.
Our newsroom is organized in pods based on a person’s job position and the show or projects they’re working on. For example, the azfamily.com Web producers all sit together next to the assignment desk so they can hear the news as it comes in. Being so close to the news helps the Web producers get a head start on gathering elements such as photos, videos or maps for the Web story and allows them to quickly get the details out via social media.
The evening news producers and writers for Good Evening Arizona and 3TV News at 9pm also sit near the assignment desk and all together. As the Evening News Producers plan their stories they work with the assignment desk and Assignment Managers to assign reporters and photographers to the stories and as those stories start coming in they write up scripts for the anchors and create the flow and timing of the shows. We also have Special Project Producers that sit in another section of the newsroom near our 3 On Your Side team. The Special Project Producers work on Politics Unplugged and any and all special interest stories. Our Sports department and the Good Morning Arizona show also have their own pods in the newsroom that encompass the anchors, reporters and producers all in one area. The rest of the staff such as the Reporters and Anchors is spread out in two columns in the middle of the newsroom. Management such as News Managers, the Director of Digital Media and the News Director all has offices on the outskirts of the newsroom.
Well this week Carey Peña made the move from the 3 On Your Side pod over near the new 10pm pod. She sits next to me, Social Media Manager and we also have a desk carved out for Fields Moseley when he arrives. This seems silly but it’s extremely important to be near each other so we can communicate and plan the day’s stories. The newsroom is a very busy and loud place, when we have to get down to work we put on our headphones. For me, I’m listening to Pandora, for the reporters and Anchors they’re writing and putting together their stories.
